World Autism Awareness Day 2013

By Holly Maby - Well, I really should know that it is World Autism Awareness day soon… but I've only just heard when it was! Maybe we're not all that aware after all! I think such a day is a good opportunity to raise peoples awareness about autism as most of the people that I've known, even if they are working with people with autism on a daily basis, such as teachers and other public services, they often don't really know much about it.

An American study that suggests young children accurately diagnosed as autistic lose their symptoms and diagnosis as they get older. This has been widely dismissed by The Disabilities Trust that says autism is a lifelong condition

Autism Support Service is ‘Heaven on Earth’

In our latest annual one of the articles in the review is about a service user in Lindfield, Naomi. Naomi left school at 18 and worked as a fishmonger in a supermarket, she loved writing radio scripts and used to read insatiably. At the age of 22 Naomi had a mental breakdown, she then had to wait six years for a diagnosis of autism. The effect on her family was devastating; relief at diagnosis but anxiety about the future.

Our service users at Hollyrood, East Sussex welcomed the new Ministers into their roles by presenting them with hand crafted business card holders and stationery boxes.

A Novel Idea

A Trio of Cartels' is a thriller set in America. Michael penned the novel after being inspired by American cop shows such asMiami Vice,Hill Street BluesandCagney and Lacey. Michael, who has Asperger Syndrome and Tourette's Syndrome, selected the publishers himself and liaised with them over the design of the front cover. With support from staff, Michael is currently in the process of selecting local bookshops and libraries for the book to be distributed to but it is already available to buy online at:

Steven Phillips

23/01/2013

Steven Phillips, a former pupil at Heathermount School, has embarked on a Work Based Learning Apprenticeship in Hospitality and Catering (Level 2) at the school. The apprenticeship, which is delivered though Four Counties Training, will take between 18 months and 2 years to complete. Steven has been employed by the Trust to work in the kitchen at Heathermount School for 22 ½ hours a week to provide the practical element of his study.

Ashley Road: Ten Years On

Ashley Road, our Autism Community Service opened on 28 February, 2002. Back then there was a staff team of four and two service users, Philip Kolanko and William Elliott, who still live at the house. Support staff from Hollyrood and Hull lent a hand in getting the house up and running. At the time staff bought in their own materials to build a barbecue in the garden and create flower beds to make it homely
