It's Brain Injury Awareness Week this week and BIRT is marking the occasion with the culmination of many weeks of baking activity. Across the Trust, service users with support from staff have been highlighting the skills that they have regained through Brain Injury Rehabilitation with the Trust by entering into 'The Grand BIRT Bake Off' which will be judged by Masterchef's Dhruv Baker.

HRH The Princess Royal opens Chalkdown House

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) welcomed Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal to Chalkdown House on Tuesday where she formally opened the new £3.5 million 20-bed independent hospital. Chalkdown House, named after the beautiful Wiltshire countryside, will provide rehabilitation for 20 people with complex brain injuries, led by an expert clinical team. Up to 60 jobs are being created.

Workshop for Occupational Therapists working in brain injury - 6 June, Swindon

BIRT is offering another training session for Occupational Therapists working with people with acquired brain injury. The event is being held at BIRT's new independent hospital Chalkdown House in Swindon on 6 June 2013. The workshop will provide training in the most effective ways of improving functional skills amongst those with brain injury. All delegates will receive a manual, which gives practical instructions for using the neurobehavioural skills training method to help people with brain injuries to perform specific functional tasks again.

Leading charity the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) has appointed Susan Munroe MBA, RGN, NDN Cert as its new Director from 1 April 2013. Ms Munroe is currently Director of Nursing and Patient Services for Marie Curie Cancer Care and takes over from Lynn Turley, who is retiring from BIRT after five years as Director and 15 years with the organisation.

BIRT opens new service Osman House

The house is named after the late Fred Osman, a former Trustee of The Disabilities Trust, who sadly passed away last year. The new development has been designed to smooth the journey between brain injury rehabilitation at a main BIRT centre or similar environment.

A New Chapter

Home for Christmas

When Dan first came to Goole Neuro Rehabilitation Centre (GNRC) in February this year he was very ill, requiring help from at least two people for all care. He was unable to walk, was PEG fed as he could not swallow, and used a Lite Writer to communicate his needs as he could not speak. The team at Goole have helped Dan to recover so that now he is able to return home for Christmas.

New Brain Injury Service in Swindon

A ceremony to mark the construction of BIRT’s new £3.5million brain injury hospital at Swindon took place this week. The new 20-bed independent hospital is due to open in Spring 2013 and will provide neurobehavioural rehabilitation and support for adults with an acquired brain injury.

New continuing rehabilitation service to open in Scholes, Leeds

Following demand from commissioners and other stakeholders for a continuing rehabilitation service in Leeds, the BIRT has announced it will be opening a 10 bed continuing rehabilitation service in September 2012. The service will provide a further link in the whole pathway of care for service users in the Yorkshire region.

Laura’s freefall was no April fool!

Laura Abbott, from Poole completed her first skydive on 1st April at Old Sarum Airfield in Dorset to raise funds for the Eyes Alight appeal. The appeal was set up by the former member of Escala, Izzy Johnston, and the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) to raise money for people who are undergoing rehabilitation for an acquired brain injury. It has also received a great deal of support from the band Mcfly, in particular Harry Judd and Tom Fletcher.

Huw Thatcher Trust raises over £40k for BIRT

In March, Huw Thatcher, 15, died from a brain aneurysm after collapsing while playing football. His family decided to set up the Huw Thatcher Trust as a way of remembering Huw in a positive way. Since then, his family and friends have raised over £40,000 to support a number of different BIRT projects.

BIRT Supporter Harry Judd Wins Strictly Come Dancing

Congratulations to BIRT supporter Harry Judd, who was crowned king of the dance floor on Saturday's final of BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing. Judd, who helped to launch BIRT's Eyes Alight appeal with long-term girlfriend Izzy Johnston earlier this year, has been raising funds for the charity which supports over 550 people across the UK who have a brain injury.
