Accessing the community is very important to a number of our service users at Goole Neurorehabilitation Centre (GNRC), however it can be extremely challenging when English is not your first language! With the support of the clinical team, one of our service users, Andrzej attended a Polish-speaking community group at The Courtyard in Goole (pictured).
Due to the language obstacles between Andrzej and staff and other service users at GNRC, Andrzej has looked forward to attending the community group to converse with others in his native language. Via interpreter, he said, “I enjoy it, I like to go every week. It’s nice to be able to speak in Polish to someone.”
Andrzej very much enjoyed his participation in the group setting, and has also appeared to have learned some more English words! In general, it has also encouraged him to build the confidence to seek out social involvement with GNRC staff and other service users. It is hoped that this will become a weekly event for Andrzej as he is supported to continue to access the community and make new acquaintances.
