New Connections

Lady with severe disabilities connected to her new family, through an e-reader. Jackie has always loved to read, but because of her physical disabilities she has had great difficulty in turning pages and even keeping a book in place. She is unable to use a mouse or computer touch pad. The Disabilities Trust is increasingly investing in assistive technology for it’s services across the UK.

Banking on Support

A team of volunteers from the Commercial Team from Eastbourne's NatWest bank have spent two days supporting physically disabled service users prepare for Christmas at Shinewater Court, a centre run by The Disabilities Trust, a leading national charity which provides high quality care, rehabilitation and support for people with complex needs.

Service Users visit AMEX Community Stadium

On Tuesday 4th December an exclusive tour of BHAFC AMEX Community Stadium was organised by two occupational therapy students; Giles and Justin, for five residents and five support staff from Shinewater Court in Eastbourne. The stadium has been designed to be fully wheelchair accessible so nowhere was off limits, other than the pitch which was under preparation for the next match.

Looking to the future

Erica was studying NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care and employed as a part-time cleaner when she was involved in a road traffic accident at the age of 22. The accident left her with speech difficulties and impaired mobility, resulting in her having to use a walking stick.

Carlton Centre

Ten service users have been attending weekly photography lessons for the last year which take place at the service every Monday evening. As their confidence and skills have increased the service users have been making slide shows and presenting to their photographs to the rest of the group, with support from the teacher.

New Eye Scanner at Shinewater Court

An eye scanner has been installed at Shinewater Court in Eastbourne, to assist service users with their communication. The Tobii eye scanner, which works through infrared technology, is connected to a PC and installed to read the eye movements of the individual.

Making Life Easier

Two Occupational Therapy students from Brighton University have recently been on placement at Shinewater Court in Eastbourne. Darren Peters and Sasha Ryan spent eight weeks at Shinewater Court building a rapport with the Service Users and explaining the role of an Occupational Therapist.

Culinary Creations at EKC

Tuesdays at Ernest Kleinwort Court, Burgess Hill, are a hive of activity in the cookery club. The members, who meet weekly, begin by deciding what they would like to cook for their lunch or evening meal, then check that nobody has any food allergies or dietary requirements that need to be considered before creating a dish.
