On the 9th June, a team of staff from Lloyds Bank visited 1101 Bristol Road, the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust’s (BIRT) specialist neurobehavioural centre, to take on some gardening and decorating tasks. Every year employees from Lloyds Bank across the country, participate in volunteering challenges as part of the ‘Day to Make a Difference’ project

Victoria Stevens, project lead for Lloyds first visited 1101 Bristol Road a few weeks beforehand to ask residents what areas they would like to see improved. They discussed ideas such as weeding, making up hanging baskets, painting the sheds and the quiet room.

A number of items were required for the job such as plants and tools. So everybody was absolutely delighted to receive a number of donations of plants and tools from local businesses including Wilko, Homebase Solihull, Jeffries Hardware and Wyevale Garden Centre Bournville. Lloyds staff themselves also collected donations of paint, brushes and shed paint.

The team of twelve volunteers from Lloyds travelled from all over the country to take part and on the day made up 16 hanging baskets, re-potted large and small planters, weeded the flower beds, painted the sheds and the quiet room with the service user’s choice of mint green and oatmeal colours. The staff and residents at Bristol Road kept the volunteers supplied with drinks and cake and some service users also got involved with the tasks during the day. One resident, Richard has taken it on himself to water all the baskets and pots everyday.

Julie Hancox, assistant manager at 1101 Bristol Road said; “The garden now looks bright and colourful and is a pleasure to sit in especially with the fine weather we have had recently. It has also attracted lots of butterflies and bees to the garden. The quiet room now looks clean and fresh and has a more welcoming feel to it. It was a hot day but a great day."

Victoria Stevens the project lead said; “It’s a pleasure to come to Bristol Road and spend a little of our time making a difference in the lives of your service users. We enjoyed meeting everyone on the unit and were made very welcome by staff and service users.”
