Chris remained consistently motivated towards his rehabilitation sessions, and showed considerable improvement throughout his time at York House. His goal was always to return to independent living back in his home area and to return to work and driving.
He spent a short period at another Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) service, Daniel Yorath House, before returning to York House. He continued to show improvement in both his independence and confidence, and made substantial progress in his self-awareness as his behaviour reached a point closer than in the past to levels which might be compatible with this long term goal.
I feel like I have got my freedom back. It’s a great feeling and now I’ll be able to get out and about and not have to rely on other people.
Chris was discharged from York House and he maintained his goal of independent living after several years in specialist care units. After being on a housing transfer list since 2008, Chris eventually secured a specially adapted bungalow in Jarrow in April 2012.
In June 2013 Chris achieved one of his other long-term goals, to drive again. He passed his test first time, driving 13 miles during an open road test.
