On Saturday 10th June Michael O’Reilly completed a one mile swim on Lake Windermere in the Great North Swim, on behalf of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) centres; Redford Court and Redford Lodge - BIRT’s neurorehabilitation centre and transitional living unit located in Liverpool.
After a chilly start, with a water temperature of 15.5c, a brave Michael took the plunge and started to catch up with other competitors who had overtaken him at the beginning and in some cases overtook them. He completed his challenge in a swift 50 minutes!
Michael said: “I was helped by the wind and waves for the first half mile, but on the turn it was coming from my right hand side into my face. With swimming the breast stroke it was quite easy to time the waves and swim through them.
"It was a brilliant experience and I look forward to doing it next year. I am going to continue with my open water swimming.
Thanks to everyone who sponsored me and to my wife for supporting me at Windermere.”
Huge congratulations go to Michael for his motivation and dedication and for raising money for BIRT, this is a brilliant achievement!
Michael is still taking donations. If you would like to donate, please visit his Just Giving page.
