Welcome to Fen House
Located in the city of Ely, in the heart of East Anglia, Fen House is a neurorehabilitation centre that offers community-based intensive rehabilitation for people with an acquired brain injury (ABI). Opened in 2005, it forms part of the nationwide network of rehabilitation support services provided by the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT).
We deliver assessment and rehabilitation for up to 25 adults. Longer term rehabilitation, care and support is also available for those who need this.
Specialist rehabilitation is based on a neurobehavioural approach and focuses on enabling service users to function as independently as possible, develop their lives as they choose and to participate in as many of their previous roles and activities as possible.
About Fen House
Who we support and how
Fen House is for people who experience any of the following symptoms:
- Cognitive problems including thinking, memory, problem solving, learning, awareness and perception
- Physical impairments that affect mobility, posture or dexterity
- Physical and verbal aggression
- Communication difficulties
- Challenging behaviour
Using a neurobehavioural approach we deliver intensive assessment, rehabilitation and discharge planning from admission. These services are carried out by our in-house interdisciplinary team.
Rehabilitation planning is focused on behaviour, cognition and mobility needs; goal planning is carried out with the service user and their family/carers.
In 2018, Fen House admitted 48 individuals following an acquired brain injury (ABI), and 45 people were discharged.
- 91% of service users required reduced levels of supervision
- 90% required only part-time or no supervision
- 79% were discharged home or to a supported living setting
- 100% improved in at least one area of intervention
Find out more about how our service users changed from admission to discharge in our Outcome report 2018.
Set in attractive landscaped grounds, Fen House offers a bright, spacious and superbly equipped environment for rehabilitation. All service users have their own comfortable en-suite bedrooms, complemented by well-appointed communal areas for dining and relaxation. Rehabilitation takes place in a modern, tranquil setting with service users enjoying access to a wide range of therapeutic and recreational activities. We have an independent living flat for people to try living with less support before moving home.
Access to the wider community forms an important part of rehabilitation. Fen House is located in the vibrant cathedral city of Ely with its wide range of shops, leisure facilities and other amenities.
During rehabilitation, progress and discharge are discussed at regular review meetings, with a view to discharge home or to a more independent environment.
In 2017, of the 36 people discharged from Fen House, 97% moved on to supported or independent living.
Yvonne was a service user at Fen House for 12 weeks, before being discharged home. She said "In my opinion Fen House is amazing...When I came I could not do anything apart from lay in bed. Now I can walk independently after coming here in a wheelchair. I can also cook for myself and make hot drinks. This is due to the help from the people at Fen House." Read Yvonne's story.
