Service users and staff at Shinewater Court were absolutely delighted to be awarded the top grant of £12,000 through the Tesco ‘Bags of Help’ initiative. The centre jumped at the chance to participate in the Bags of Help scheme, which offered community groups and projects in each of Tesco’s 416 regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags, and were absolutely delighted with the result.

The initiative was rolled out in Tesco stores located across Eastbourne, from Monday 31st October – Sunday 13th November. The public were able to vote in store to decide which community group or project should receive either the £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000 award. Staff and service users from Shinewater Court worked hard to promote their project and it has paid off perfectly.

Shinewater Court’s Gardens project is being held in conjunction with Groundwork, who are working with Tesco on this initiative. The grant will be hugely beneficial to the centre and will improve the service user’s lives by enabling them to get involved in gardening projects and increase their physical activity and well-being. The work being carried out will include a complete overhaul of the grassed areas in the garden, which due to an old drainage system currently flood whenever it rains making the areas inaccessible for wheelchairs.

The grant will therefore be used pay for new drainage to be installed to make the garden functional all year round and in all weathers. Additionally it will fund the restoration of the paths and paving between the grassed areas to ensure an even smoother ride around the courtyard. Accessible flower beds will also be purchased so that wheelchair users at Shinewater will be able to do their own gardening, which the green fingered amongst them are very excited about. Work is due to start in March, with a strawberries and champagne party planned for the summer to celebrate the official reopening of the garden.

Anita Cobb, Service Manager at Shinewater said: “It’s so fantastic that the people of Eastbourne and Tesco Stores Ltd have been able to support us and breathe new life into our garden project. We are over the moon to have been awarded the full £12,000 grant award as it will make a huge difference to those who live here. Thank you to everyone that voted for Shinewater!”
