Service users, Jon and Steve, from Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT) centre Fen House, worked together to organise and participate in a charity bike ride on Wednesday 21st September at a local park in Ely Cambridgeshire.

The challenge was to cycle 25 miles with the help of their therapists, families, friends, staff and other service users to commemorate the 25th anniversary of BIRT.

Organising the event combined their rehabilitation goals of improving their communication, IT skills and general fitness as well as targeting the use of social media to help fundraise. Jon and Steve were both keen cyclists before their injuries and this event provided the opportunity for them to be supported to return to cycling.

They both used adapted bikes supplied by Milton Country Park in Cambridge as part of their ‘You can bike too’ scheme. With the support of the therapy team Jon set up a JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Jon-Blacklock2and promoted the event on Facebook using his iPad. Steve created posters that he placed around the centre telling staff about the event and how to donate. With the assistance of leisure co-ordinator Lisa, he made a cake for all the cyclists to share on the day.

So far the total raised is £530 and the money will go towards improving the space outside of the rehabilitation gym at Fen House to enable more therapy to happen outdoors.
